3 Tips For Storing Fragile Items

Fragile items like mirrors, glassware, and antiques can be a headache to store. These items often require special care. Otherwise, they can get damaged and cause you unnecessary loss.

Whether you are moving or want a place to store your fragile items, there are measures you can take to guarantee you maximum safety in a storage unit.

The following tips will be helpful when packing fragile items for storage.

Search for Climate-controlled Lockers

Climate-controlled storage units offer a controlled environment for items stored in them. Fluctuating temperatures are a major concern for some items. Extreme heat or cold can easily damage fragile items such as important documents, clothes, valuable artwork, etc.

Climate-controlled storage lockers also keep humidity in check. High humidity can affect certain items like electronics and books, especially if you intend to store such items for several months.

Dust particles can also damage these valuable items. Thankfully, storage climate-controlled units offer excellent proof against dirt. Moreover, they also have good air circulation, which protects items that easily deteriorate because of stale air.

Wrap Glassware in Layers

Glassware can present a real challenge when moving. Luckily, using layers is the best way to provide extra cushioning for the items. For instance, you can place crumpled paper or Styrofoam in the middle of your mugs, and at the bottom of the boxes that you pack your glassware in.

You should then make an exterior protective layer for the items using newspapers or bubble wrap. Tape the protective layer to the items and put them in a box. Make sure the box you use can handle your items' shape and size.

You can fill up any spaces left in the box by using bubble wrap or any other suitable wrapping material. Close off the box and seal it with tape all around. Lastly, remember to label the box as fragile so that the storage unit workers give it special care at all times.

Use the Right Boxes

Choosing the right boxes for every item will save you a lot of trouble. Smaller boxes are ideal for fragile items. Their small space prevents the items in the box from shifting around. Thus, they are less vulnerable to damage.

Specifically, look for good-quality boxes that can't break easily. Boxes with thicker sidewalls are a much better option. Not only do they prevent the items in the box from shifting around inside, but they can also be stacked safely without crushing your items.

For extra safety, ensure the boxes have enough padding. Pad the bottom, the sides, and the top of the boxes using crumpled paper or newspapers. This way, your items will be safe even when the boxes are accidentally dropped or bumped around. Also, remember to emphasize to your storage unit service of the delicate nature of the items you store.
