3 Ways To Make Your Storage Unit Smell Better

Having a storage unit is a convenient way to keep things safe and out of the way periodically. However, foul odors can sometimes arise in a unit, and they have to be taken care of in order to prevent the odor from latching onto everything that you place inside. Storage facilities do a lot to keep units clean, but there are also some things you can do to help eliminate bad odors. Here are a few good ideas.

Keep anything that has an odor stored in an airtight container.

If you are storing something that has an odor inside of your storage unit, make sure it is enclosed in an airtight storage container. This will keep odors from invading the rest of the unit and causing everything else to have a bad smell.

Clean the unit with a vinegar solution periodically.

A solution of vinegar and water can do a world of good to eradicate odors. With multiple people taking things in and out of a unit, odors can accumulate quickly. It is always a good idea to use a solution of vinegar and water to clean the walls and floors and any shelving that may be present before you move your own items in, especially if there is already a noticeable odor inside the unit. You can repeat this process periodically if you have your items in the unit for a long time.

Install a dehumidifier in your unit and run it occasionally.

Some units will get a funky odor because there is a high humidity level inside the unit. Moisture can lead to a dank, mildewy odor that will make everything inside the unit take on the same smell. In a lot of cases, you can combat problems with excess moisture in the unit by using a dehumidifier inside if it has electricity available. Just make sure you clear it with the storage facility owner first. In other cases, non-electrical dehumidifiers can be used to passively pull some of the excess water from the air.

Place odor-absorbing materials inside the unit.

Using things like air fresheners and other fragrance products can be a temporary solution to mask certain odors. However, these products don't do a whole lot of good if there are already bad odors in the unit. What you should do is place items inside the unit that can actually absorb and eradicate foul odors. For example, high-quality kitty litter has odor-absorbent compounds that will trap odor particles, and even something as simple as baking soda containers can help as well.
